Half-marathon, the final week

leave a comment

On Nov 25, 2012 I finished my first half-marathon in Beijing, in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

This is the second part of two posts reviewing my experience of preparing a half-marathon race as a novice runner in the span of 10 months (Jan 31 to Nov 25, 2012).

The Taper

The last week is called the “taper”, where you prepare for the race while focusing on the following:

  • Cut down milage
  • Be careful with what you eat
  • Have good sleep

Although it’s my first race, I’m pretty calm. However, my stomach was very excited. I got a very sensitive stomach which can be easily aroused by anything spicy, cold or alcoholic. Medication helped.

I ran only two times in the final week, and took two days off before the race.

Race Day

I have two goals on that day, finish 21K in 2 hours and 45 minutes, and enjoy the race.

Rush Start

I’m a slow runner, in my training my first 5K usually bumped my heart rate to around 165 bpm (beat per minute).

On the race day, 5 minutes after I cross the starting line, my heart rate was close to 180 bpm. That was because of excitement, also the atmosphere – surrounded by runners, people were enjoying this, so was I.

Steady Mid-run

I followed the “rabbit” whose goal was 5:30 to finish the full marathon, I thought I should be good to stick with him (at least for some time).

The pace was steady, and heart rate went below 170 bpm for the first time.

Pushing Limits

I left the “rabbit” at around the mark of 16K, picked up the pace.

The final 5K was hard, as usual I walk through water station at every kilometer, drink and rest for a little bit.

Anyway, I finished, in around 2:30.

Post Race

I twisted my ankle the afternoon after finishing the race, it kept me out of running for 2 weeks.

Now I’m trying to run 3 times a week, 5K per run.

What’s next?

Will I keep running? I think so.

Will I run in another race? I think so.

When and how long? I don’t know yet.
